How Movies Make Us

News broke that filming Freaky Friday 2 is underway. You might have seen the photo above floating around the internet, showing Lindsey Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis sitting outside of each other’s trailers having switched places (cute)! It’s also been confirmed that several major cast members are returning, like Chad Michael Murray!!

As a 1990 baby, I was 12 years old when the first remake came out in 2013 (yes, there is an even older one from 1976 with Jodie Foster). Based on that fact alone, you can imagine the instant, dramatic return of my 12-year-old self, screaming on the inside when Disney confirmed this news.

A flood of nostalgia came back to me from my preteens and had me revisiting some memories from that time. This is what I love so much about movies and music… They’re mile markers for our lives and truly the only way to time travel at present. Hearing one of your favorite oldies or watching that coming-of-age movie that defined “growing up” for you is the best feeling.

This got me thinking about the age old trope, “They don’t make them like used to.” Through my nostalgic reflections, this was my immediate thought. How lucky am I that I grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s when they made the best movies. But… I countered that thought with the fact that I hear my parents say the same thing about music from the 70s and 80s.

Whichhh brought me to the conclusion that… You, specifically, are privy to a collection of music, movies, tv shows, etc. within the same decade or era because of the memories that you made during those times. The media you’ve consumed in each decade of life, is specific and special to you. And this media has helped influence who you are today.

Really didn’t mean to get deep on only the second newsletter, but I feel that “consuming” media often gets a bad rap. And as it pertains to certain forms of media (*cough cough*, social), yes it should. But film and tv are still around and celebrated today because they are so much more than an hour or two of entertainment.

Anyway… Freaky Friday 2 is set to release sometime in 2025. Yay!
